As a Virtual Assistant specializing in working with authors, there are various tasks that I assist my clients with regarding the book publishing process. When a client wishes to include a song lyric, cartoon, quote, etc., in his/her book, it is critical to ensure that permission is obtained from the owner of that work. In the workshop "Permissions Acquisition," Joyce and Dan share their expertise and experience by outlining processes and tips for searching to confirm if a work needs to have permission obtained to use in a book, helpful resources to conduct online searches, and templates of sample letters to submit to copyright owners and companies when requesting permission. Another critical area that Joyce and Dan discuss in the workshop is the importance of reviewing privacy policies and copyright statements on the Internet; having content available online does not automatically issue permission for others to use it. I highly recommend this workshop to authors and author assistants. There are many aspects involved in the area of permissions; this workshop provides the basics of getting started with obtaining permissions and will introduce you to the multi-level of services offered by Joyce and Dan.
